Start the New Year with a Healthy Mindset
Whew…we made it through 2023. It sure was an interesting and intense year for a multitude of reasons. The instability of the real estate market made most of my days feel like a rollercoaster ride. And the inconsistency of the market left parts of me feeling unsettled. If you are like me, January doesn’t always feel like a fresh page in the book. I often experience a bit of burnout from the busyness of the prior year, and it can take me a minute to gather my thoughts and energy when jumping into this fresh start! I wanted to share a few things I have learned to help keep a healthy mindset no matter what obstacles life throws at you. Protecting your mind is vital— It takes hard work and dedication. So allow me to share with you what has worked for me because I believe sharing is caring.
1. Celebrate the SUCCESSES
I encourage myself & others to recognize the goals that have been accomplished (big or small) and not dwell on any shortcomings. Every year, I set personal and professional goals to ensure that I am actively working towards becoming a better version of myself. Growth happens within each of us and it is vital to celebrate the wins along the way. I also suggest making the time to evaluate how you did and what areas you can improve upon going forward. I like to finish the evaluation process with a pat on my back (literally- give yourself a pat on the back). Then, turn the page and move forward.
2. Never Stop LEARNING
Creating a list of books, audible books, or podcasts for the year can provide a nice road map to learning new things. I select 6 books and 6 podcasts to carve out time to read and listen to. I like alternating a book with a podcast to shake things up. I spend a lot of time on the road, so consuming new information via audio tends to be easier. Quick Tip: keep a small notebook in your car or use your phone notes to jot down key points to refer back to. I also have an ongoing list of recommendations from friends, clients, other authors, or inspirational people that I store in my iphone notes because it is important to have a variety of options to incorporate when needed. Having a written plan will hold you accountable.
3. Stay ACTIVE
Since incorporating physical exercise into my day, I have learned that releasing those endorphins allows for a clearer mind. Whether walking with my kids, completing 5am OrangeTheory workouts, playing baseball or volleyball in the backyard, stretching, bike riding, golfing, or swimming- movement is key in my world. Perhaps you will find out it will have a positive impact in your life too. And it is more fun when you stay active with someone else, so I highly recommend you find a friend or loved one to participate in your active lifestyle. The extra accountability is helpful too!
4. Quality Time with your TRIBE
I am not sure if this is the same for others as it is for me, but nothing keeps me more centered than spending time with my “tribe”. Time spent with my family, friends, colleagues, and workout buddies is always a treat. The human interaction and conversation leave my heart feeling full each and every time. A “tribe” of your best, most favorite people is the greatest gift. Carve out time for them, always!
5. Get out & see the WORLD
Some of my most treasured moments have been traveling the world, both near and far. For me, it is not always simple to push pause and escape, but somehow, God grants me the time to step away from reality to explore his beautiful creations. I genuinely enjoy learning about new cultures, experiencing exhilarating activities, indulging in different cuisines, meeting new people, and taking in life’s precious moments. After traveling afar, I usually return home with a refreshed perspective and greater appreciation for the community I am privileged to be a part of. I have also learned that exploring new scenery within our own hometown can leave me feeling like a tourist, which is kind of cool, too! My advice to you is to get out, explore, try new things…This world really is a beautiful place; make the time to enjoy it.
I hope these suggestions will help you start this new year with a fresh mindset. Remember, small changes can make a BIG impact. Stay consistent with your activities and habits. I am rooting for you!
